This video is part of a series highlighting six ʻāina-based organizations in Waiʻanae and sharing their moʻolelo — the stories that connect community, culture, and land across generations.

The first feature focuses on Kaʻala Farm, a remarkable cultural learning center that has been serving the community for more than 40 years.

Under the leadership of Eric Enos, Kaʻala Farm works to restore traditional Hawaiian agricultural practices and protect important water rights while maintaining an ancient loʻi kalo (taro farm) in the beautiful Waiʻanae Valley on Oʻahu’s west side.

Operating off the grid, the farm partners with schools and community organizations across Hawaiʻi to help preserve cultural knowledge and strengthen connections to the land for future generations.

The mission of GoFarm Hawaiʻi is to enhance Hawaiʻi’s food security and strengthen the local economy by increasing the number of sustainable, locally based agricultural producers across the islands.

Through its statewide farmer training programs and AgBusiness services, GoFarm Hawaiʻi supports both new and experienced farmers by sharing practical farming methodologies, sound business practices, and access to valuable resources.

By combining education, mentorship, and hands-on experience, the program helps farmers build successful and resilient agricultural businesses.

Today, GoFarm Hawaiʻi has grown into one of the largest beginning farmer development programs in the United States, playing an important role in supporting local agriculture and helping cultivate the next generation of farmers in Hawaiʻi.

Hoa ‘Āina O Mākaha (Land of Mākaha Shared in Friendship) was founded by Luigi “Gigi” Cocquio and Judy Seladis-Cocquio over 45 years ago in Wai‘anae.

The mission for this 5 acre farm and nonprofit educational center is to “create peaceful communities in harmony with nature through the eyes, hands, and hearts of the children.”

Over the years they have helped and inspired thousands of people to learn how to care for the land while incorporating traditional Hawaiian values.

Highlight video for MauiWES, showing their ongoing efforts in helping the communities of Maui, mainly Lahaina.

For the last year, they have tested almost 2,000 Maui residents for heavy metals exposure, chronic respiratory diseases and even mental health screenings, and plan to continue testing and helping these survivors for many years to come.

MauiWES was created by University of Hawaiʻi professors Dr. Alika Maunakea and Dr. Ruben Juarez, who teach Epigenomics and Economics respectively. The study was made possible with the support of many organizations, including the Maui Strong Fund, the National Institutes of Health, the State of Hawaiʻi, Kaiser Permanente, and many others.

The Maui Wildfire Exposure Registry was created to understand and address the long-term health and social impacts of the Maui wildfires.

By participating in the registry, individuals can connect with important support services while helping researchers and public health organizations better understand the needs of affected communities.

The program’s mission is to strengthen community resilience by linking residents with healthcare providers, resources, and organizations dedicated to recovery and long-term well-being.

The programs PALS Hawaiʻi and PLACES Hawaiʻi in Waiʻanae help connect students with their communities through place-based learning.

What began in 2006 with one school and just 35 students has grown into a movement that encourages young people to learn through culture, land, and meaningful relationships with their community.

By engaging students with real-world experiences rooted in Hawaiʻi’s history and environment, these programs help cultivate curiosity, confidence, and a deeper sense of connection.

Their work demonstrates how powerful learning can be when schools and communities collaborate to support the growth and success of the next generation.

Throughout the challenges of the pandemic, ʻElepaio Social Services remained a vital source of support for the community. From providing essential nutritional resources to ensuring that kupuna felt safe and keiki received the care and support they needed, the organization helped bring people together during an incredibly difficult time.

Despite the hardships, their efforts helped keep the community grounded, connected, and cared for.

By leaning on one another and working together, ʻElepaio Social Services strengthened the sense of resilience and unity that continues to carry the community forward.

It was a great honor to collaborate with Pua Ishibashi, Kaleookalani Ishibashi, and members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I – Māmalahoa to create this special video presentation.

In this project, the group performs the powerful “Eia Hawaiʻi” dance in some of the most breathtaking and culturally significant locations on Hawaiʻi Island — including Mauna Kea, Waipiʻo Valley, and Hilo Bay.

This performance beautifully honors the history, culture, and deep connection between the Hawaiian people and their land. Through movement, music, and sacred landscapes, the video captures a meaningful expression of heritage and respect for these extraordinary places.

Photography for this project was provided by Kiana Bourne of Kahiki Photography, with music by Sudden Rush (“Hawaiʻi 3000”) and Kawika Kahiapo (“ʻO ʻOe ʻIo”), helping bring the spirit and emotion of the performance to life.
